Despite the fact that the Phi Phi Islands of Thailand have been discovered and prices here have doubled in the past few years, there is no denying the exquisite beauty of these islands. We are staying on Koh Phi Phi Don (Koh means island in Thai), at 28 square kilometers square the largest of the six islands that comprise this archipelago and the place where most tourists stay. Smaller, neighboring Koh Phi Phi Le is famous as the location where the movie “The Beach” featuring Leonardo Di Caprio was shot.
The entire archipelago is formed of towering Karst limestone spires with their steep cliffs, large caves and dwarf trees growing out of the rock crevices. These spectacular rock towers and the blindingly white, powder fine sand beaches truly make this one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. So far, I have not done much other than walk the beach, eat like a pig, lie in the sun, and attend last night’s fire show, where young boys twirl flaming batons. I am thoroughly enjoying the rest and relaxation, however those who crave more excitement will find many more active things to do in the Phi Phi Islands.
I have already decided that the restaurant right here at the resort is my favorite. It is an open-air affair perched on the shore overlooking the turquoise seas. With rattan woven mats and floor pillows for seating, one simply kicks off their shoes and settles down among the cushions whenever a hunger pang strikes. A full meal? No problem. It’s just a snack you want? No problem. Yesterday it was fresh mango juice with fried squid, accompanied by a sweet and sour sauce laced with hot peppers that was to die for!
We have decided to stay here for 6 nights, so if I get my energy up I will climb the top of the mountain to take a photo of the twin bays of Koh Phi Phi that form the two incredible crescent beaches for which it is so famous. I might also rent a kayak for a day and explore all the limestone caves around the shore. On the other hand, I might just do nothing at all. Can you hear me smiling?
Thanks for making me smile. Looking over the cold, fog covered ocean here on the Outer Banks, I cannot help but close my eyes and imagine myself laying in the sand on the Phi Phi Islands! Thinking of you…
