USPS Provides Online Link To Hold Mail When Traveling

My friend, Pat, is a mail carrier in Key West. She tells me that for the first time ever, her local Post Office is downsizing. Because so many people are receiving and paying their bills online these days, the sheer quantity of snail mail is dwindling. Nevertheless, when we travel, there is still the question of what to do about our mail. With identity theft becoming more prevalent, it is no longer advisable to leave your mail in the box until you return. For the same reason, asking a good-hearted neighbor to pick up your mail is no longer an option. No matter how responsible your neighbor, the signs of an empty house or apartment could allow access to what lands in your mailbox…bank statements, credit card bills, etc.

Today I learned of an online service provided by the U.S. Postal Service. Now you can notify the Post Office to hold mail when traveling in two minutes flat without even leaving your house. They’ll hold your mail from three to 30 days, and resume normal delivery on the date you specify. Click on the following link to learn more about USPS Mail Hold. If your area isn’t served online simply call 1 800 ASK USPS (1 800 275 8777) and a representative can assist you.

  2. I would suggest that if you try the hold thing or whatever, better have a back-up, cause it simply might not work, and if you\’re away you wouldn\’t even know. I recently moved in Las Vegas, simply across town and am still not getting my mail (5 weeks later) after receiving the confirmation of the change of address at the new address right away. Called the 800 number as I was waiting for something, literally 45 minutes on hold, got confirmation number for complaint and told to go to new address local branch if I was not contacted in 48 hours which I was not. So I go and wait there, then am told old branch is one to now contact. Oh and the PO has to do Amazons deliveries, is downsizing, and is 5 billion in debt, just in the news.

  3. I’m traveling right now for 5 months and had to figure out what to do with my mail too. Placing a hold didn’t make sense because I would be away for so long and still need to deal with the mail itself. Instead, I signed up for a service called Earth Class Mail. They receive and scan each incoming letter so I’m able to read my mail online. Pretty handy service.

  4. Somehow, between me and my husband, we have managed to gather over30 thousand in credit card debt. We can’t seem to find a way out. We have tried to budget, we have done research, and we have even cut out alot of fun stuff in our lives. I think it’s time for me to get a full time job. If we can’t pull this off, we may have to declare backruptcy.
