Driveaway Cars – Like Driving Someone Else’s Automobile for Free

Don’t look now but the open road is calling. Faced with onerous security regulations, endless add-on fees, and uncomfortable planes that squeeze customers in like sardines, more and more travelers are opting for the highways rather than the skyways. Americans are rediscovering the joy of driving cross-country with the wind in their hair, the music cranked, and the freedom to check out quirky attractions that would forever have been overlooked from 30,000 feet in the air.

This resurgent love affair is also revitalizing driveaway companies, services that match drivers with customers who want their cars delivered to distant destinations. Vehicles need to be moved for a variety of reasons, including corporate relocations, military transfers, and quite often in the case of snowbirds who want to have use of their own car at their winter home but don’t want to do the driving. Car owners pay driveaway companies to move their cars and the company contracts with drivers to make the one-way trips. Driver are responsible for all but the first tank of gas, meals and accommodations along the way, and must put down a deposit (generally $300-400), which is refundable upon delivery of the car to the owner.

There are some limitations to this type of travel. Your schedule must be flexible and you must be willing to drive between the destinations required by the customer. The route and schedule are agreed upon prior to departure and offer enough flexibility for drivers to do some sightseeing along the way, however customers will often load trunks and back seats with their personal belongings, so there is room for only one additional passenger and limited luggage. Drivers must also have a clean driving record, three forms of identification, and be willing to undergo a criminal background check. If none of this is problematic, driveaways are like getting a free rental car, especially for those who have no car or own a vehicle that is not dependable.

Although driveaway companies can be found all over the country, some locations need more drivers than others; routes between eastern Canadian cities and Florida or Arizona, for example, are in high demand due to annual snowbird migration in the spring and fall. 2. Florida to Arizona. I need to bring 2 pieces of equipment from:
    2512 SW 30th Ave
    Hallandale Beach, FL 33009.
They would fill the fold down back seats of a mid size SUV or station wagon size, or 1/2 of back of van. Size of large dining room chairs each. [email protected] Thank you.
I am thinking of even driving a one-way Uhaul van back if you need share. I can drive your vehicle for you.

  3. Hello!

I am a 28 year old female, relocating from NYC to my hometown of Portland, OR in July 2016. I have a clean driving record, am extremely responsible and would be traveling with one friend to see the great American sights as we bid NY farewell after 10 years! My friend is also a licensed driver with a clean driving record (also 28 years old). I would not charge any fee, and am willing to travel anywhere near NYC to pick up your vehicle and drop it anywhere on the west coast that is convenient for you. Ideally we would choose a time frame of about 3 weeks to drive across country, as we’d like to make some stops along the way to sight see and spend an evening or two with family.

Thanks for helping my road trip dream come true! I hope to hear from you.

  6. Wanting to get a 2009 Chevy Aveo from Burlington, Vt. To Southern Oregon (or anywhere in Oregon that suits the driver). Now is great, but anytime in the next month or 2 would suffice.

Trying to find a situation where both sides get their needs met via some middle ground compromise.

I figure there are a lot of variables and what not to address and agree upon.

    • Hey there friend,

I’m in Colorado and looking to get to Oregon, if someone can get your car a little further West, I’d love to get your car the rest of the way.

I have a lot of long distance driving experience (Denver to Montana, and all over the West Coast), a clean driving record, and just plain good sense and awareness.

Keep me in mind if something fits this situation.

      Thanks.

    • Hi Rich
I am moving my 90 yr. old father to Northern California, Davis. He, currently, lives on Long Island. He will be moving out sometime in March/April. We are flexible on dates and could make arrangements for
you to pick up the car from a family member. His car is a, well maintained, 2001 Honda Accord and very dependable. We could easily pick the car up from you, if you want to take it as far as the Bay Area…..I have kids that live in SF, or we could get you a ticket on Amtrak from Davis to the Bay. Let me know if you have any interest. Thank you

      • Hi I am travelling from Pennsylvania to Los Angeles Leaving PA on March 5th. I am able to pick up on Long Island first by getting a rental from PA to Long Island. I am visiting family in Los Angeles and SF area. I don’t fly and I’d rather not put the miles on my car. I am 33 year old mother of 2 daughters. I am very responsible and have an excellent driving record. Let me know if this time frame would work for you. I would just get a rental home, but it would save me a lot not having rental both ways. I would arrive in Los Angeles on the 7th and then San Franscisco on March 11th or 12th to drop off. [email protected]
