One of many rooms excavated at the ruins of Herculaneum, Italy, which was totally covered by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. These frescoes in House of the Black Room demonstrate the high level of art and culture that was enjoyed by the Herculaneans.
I always wanted to go to Herculaneum over Pompeii, but when in the area circumstances meant I ended up in Pompeii. This just gives me another reason to go back.
Hi Michael: Given a choice between Pompeii and Herculaneum, I think most people choose Pompeii. And I probably would do the same if I had time to visit only one site. But Herculaneum, in my opinion, is much more interesting, so hope you do have an opportunity to return and see it.
Interesting – I wonder how long, excavation took place for. Imaging it to be a big job
Michael, they’ve been digging it out, a little at a time, since it was discovered in the mid-1700’s.
I have always preferred Herculaneum to its cousin Pompeii. Sadly, I have watched both sites decline rapidly over the past 8 yrs. glad to see they are still excavating. Just wish they would restore as well
I have always preferred Herculaneum to its more famous cousin Pompei. Sadly they have both fallen into such disrepair. I am glad they are still making discoveries.
