Frescoes in House of the Black Room, Discovered During Excavations at Herculaneum, Italy

One of many rooms excavated at the ruins of Herculaneum, Italy, which was totally covered by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. These frescoes in House of the Black Room demonstrate the high level of art and culture that was enjoyed by the Herculaneans.

    • Hi Michael: Given a choice between Pompeii and Herculaneum, I think most people choose Pompeii. And I probably would do the same if I had time to visit only one site. But Herculaneum, in my opinion, is much more interesting, so hope you do have an opportunity to return and see it.

    • Michael, they’ve been digging it out, a little at a time, since it was discovered in the mid-1700’s.

  1. I have always preferred Herculaneum to its more famous cousin Pompei. Sadly they have both fallen into such disrepair. I am glad they are still making discoveries.
