Glass paste wall mosaics, shell decorations, lava foam, and nymphaeum topped by theatrical masks in House of Neptune and Amphitrite at Herculaneum, demonstrate how every detail of life was preserved by the manner in which the eruption flowed into the city so rapidly, filling every nook and cranny.
Spectacular! The aesthetic sense of the Herculanians and their respect for architecture astounds me, especially when I think of a couple of ugly new buildings that recently went up in my city with nothing but the bottom line in mind, it seems. If you have any detail images of the artwork in these long-ago rooms I hope you will post some.
I have been riveted by your Vesuvian series – fascinating and so many questions!
Hi Nancy. So glad you’re enjoying my photo series on Herculaneum – there’s lots more to come, including some in-depth articles, so stay tuned.
