Hi Barbara!
My name is Ricart and first of all, as a local from Figueres, I would like to congratulate you for the picture, I really like it. After looking for a while to it, I noticed that there is something wrong on the title. The word plaza it is not well used in this context for two main reasons: the first one because it is a spanish word and in Figueres we would call it Plaça instead. But this is only a small detail. The second reason, and most important, is that we call rambla those places that are used to cover a creek. That means that under this rambla or Barcelona’s ramblas there’s a stream of water.
Thank you very much for your attention and congratulations!
Thank you for your comment, Ricart. I purposely did not use the word Plaça because the “ç” character is not supported by all browsers – sometimes it is displayed as a ?. As for La Rambla, the plaza was created between 1831 and 1840 by covering a dry riverbed, which then became the center of the town.
We stayed on La Ramblas while in Barcelona. Loved how it was so alive all day and evening. Great street to wander down and people watch. Even better…we could watch the buskers from our hotel balcony.
Hi Anita: They say you should always leave a place before you are ready. In the case of Barcelona, I didn’t have nearly enough time to spend strolling La Rambla when I was there recently. It’s something I’ll have to do when I return.
