In the Jewish Quarter of the Old Town of Syracuse, Sicily, stores traditionally occupied the ground level, while proper homes were on the upper floor. Recent discoveries have located the site of the original synagogue, as well as the Mikvah, the ritual Jewish Bath, which has been completely restored.

I love these old Jewish quarters with all the balconies.
