To experience the true Delhi, visit Lajpat Nagar Central Market, located at the center of the Lajpat Nagar residential neighborhood in South Delhi. The district developed during the 1950’s, as Pakistani refugees streamed in following the 1947 partition between India and Pakistan. Over time, it has evolved into one of the most sought-after communities in Delhi.
With its specialty in textiles, Lajpat Nagar Central Market is a popular place to purchase fabric, drapes, linens, or clothing. Shoppers tear through fabrics heaped on sidewalks, holding lengths up to the sun to assess their color and design. Though the scene can appear quite chaotic, there is an order of sorts. In the midst of the cacophony, money exchanges hands and purchases are expertly wrapped. Very few tourists visit this market, thus they are always welcomed with broad smiles and a willingness to pose for photos.
Author’s note: This was just one of many fascinating destinations I visited during my stay in Delhi. I have my wonderful hosts, Prakash Kutir B&B with Prakash Kutir Homestay to thank for their suggestions.
