The baby’s face is covered with Thanakha paste, made from a powder obtained by grinding branches of the Thanakha tree. It is widely used as a protection from the intense sun, and the designs are considered to enhance the beauty of those who wear it, especially women, who are adept at creating intricate designs on their cheeks and foreheads. As with almost everyone I met in Myanmar, this man was friendly and more than happy to allow me to take photos. This was just one of many magical sights seen during my Myanmar Explorer Cruise/Tour with Viking River Cruises.

  1. Barbara, thanks so much for clearing up the face paint mystery 😉 I always saw folks on our visa runs from Thailand to Myanmar wearing the paste. My guess was a zinc-type substance for blocking the sun. Now I know. Fab picture, as always!
