  1. Hi Barbara, Hi from Edinburgh. I’m enjoying reading your Mexico posts as I will be travelling there this summer with my husband and 8 year old son. I travelled in Mexico back in 1995 and your photography is bringing back great memories.I just noticed that in one of your posts you mentioned enjoying a coconut ice-cream. I know my son is going to want to try all the ice-creams available. Do you think it is fine to eat ice-cream form vendors ? I was worried that they were made with non-purified water. Sorry to bother you with such a random question !
    Very best wishes,
    Jo

    • Hi Jo: You know, I never really thought about whether the ice cream or
frozen ices were made from purified water, but my guess would be that they
aren’t. Frankly, I don’t pay much attention to the water issue around
Mexico. I eat salads, drink drinks with ice cubes, even brush my teeth in
the water and have never gotten sick other than one time, many years ago, in
Acapulco, and I am convinced that was food poisoning. Of course, I’ve been
traveling in Mexico and Asia and third-world countries for years, so I
probably have built up an immunity. Best advice would be to ask the vendor:
Es su helado hecho con agua purificada? (remember that the letter ‘h’ is
silent) Enjoy Mexico – I know you will!

  2. Thank you. This is the first time I have ever read your blog, and your bio could be my own, I think you’ll understand perfectly what I mean when I say thank you so so much!

      • Dear Miss Barbara,

Thank you for your Reply, i know it looks not right, about asking you for collaborations for Albanian Tours, or half-day tours in Albania, trekking in North Albania. tour guides, Group and individual tours for incoming tourists, Reservation of all types of accommodation. Tours on specific themes, Tour guides in various languages, Car hire, Transfers, etc.
Because you are running Blog, not Travel Agency ? But i thing Albanian tourism is growing year by year and because of my experience of 6 years working in 5 star hotel management and 6 years as Freelancer Guide, now i’m running my Touristic Agency. I have a lot experience and connections down here.
So for me it will be very interesting to Collaborate together as partners.
Pls thing about at let me know if it will be interesting for you?

Thanks and i’m waiting for your reply.
        Best Regards,

Remember you have to be in the photo yourself to prove you where actually there.. 🙂

So if you want to write something about it, or compete with your own photos, just go into theultimatetourist.com

    Good luck on your travels!

  7. Hi Barbara,
I came across your blog site from travelpod’s top 100 travel blogs. I admire you for having the courage to quit your job and go on your journey. I feel that is what many of us should do. I currently don’t have 9 to 5 job as I got laid off last year. That was the best thing that could happen to me, otherwise, I would not have the courage to quit on my own. Now I am working on my home based travel business. Once it takes off, I will be able to travel around the world. You have shown me that it does not matter at what age, anyone can do it. Thank you! 🙂

  8. Barbara – thanks for your instructions on how to use your IPhone internationally without breaking the bank. I’m wondering if the information you provided a year ago is still relevant and if it’s the same for an IPhone 4g. Do you know? Thanks. Enjoy your travels! (I was in Chitwan a few years ago. Great place!)

    Abi

    • Hi Abi: Sorry for the late reply but somehow your comment got deleted and I just found it. I have not personally testes the iPhone 4 with my instructions but others who have left comments that my instructions worked just fine with their iPhone 4, so I’m assuming everything would be the same.

  9. Hi Barbara
Just wanted to drop you a line to say how much I like your web site and your attitude to life and travel.
Keep it up – I’m loving it!
    Regards
    Sonia

    • Thanks Sonia! Have lots of travel planned throughout 2011 so you’ll have
plenty of new travel adventures to read about. Happy New Year and all the
      best for the coming year.

  10. Hi Barbara:

We are a naturist couple and were interested in getting the e-mail address of John and Lori of Casa de Suenos in Mexico. There’s a write up about it.
You can contact us at the e-mail we provided

    Thanks Barbara

  11. Hi, although I haven’t yet looked through your website in detail, it appears that articles (and comments) are not dated. Please add those (at least for the articles). Thanks.

  12. Kitty: I have used my iPhone all over the world for the last year and by
following the instructions in my article I have had zero charges for
    interanational calls.

      • Kitty: When you set up your phone as instructed in my post, you can only use
the Internet when you have a wifi connection.

        • I got it now, the wifi can’t be a password protected one. I used my home wifi, but it was locked and when I tried one that wasn’t and it worked.

          Thank you so much!!

Now I can take my iphone when I go to Taiwan, thank you!!

If it weren’t for your post, I wouldn’t be able to bring it on the trip, because my mom’s friend told her that when someone took her iphone oversea they came back with a HUGH bill.

          Thank you so much again!!

          • Kitty: You CAN use it with a password protected wifi, as long as you know
the password. When you look at your available wifi networks and select one,
if it has a little padlock next to it you will automatically be prompted to
enter the password. Remember that passwords are case sensitive. It’s only
when you don’t know the password that it won’t work. And with Starbucks and
other restaurants all over the place, you can easily get passwords for the
            price of a coffee.

  13. Hi
I read your entry about how to not have a huge bill when using the iphone oversea, and I had some questions.

I’m going to Taiwan and staying for about two to three weeks
and I have an iphone 4

With the information that you provided, about turning off all the things
    how much was your bill?

    or you weren’t charged anything?

I really want to bring my iphone and I really don’t want to have a huge bill when I get back from my trip.

  14. Hi Barbara,

I am planning atrip to Bangladesh to witness the Mission Aviation Fellowship work there (I work for MAF here in England). Google gave me your site. It’s wonderful. You made me waste an evening! How inspiring and uplifting. Thank you!

    • Richard – thank you so much! You just made my day. I love what I do, but
it’s not always easy to be a perpetual traveler with no real home, so it
helps to keep me going when I read comments like yours. If you recall, I’d
love to know what you were searching for when you found my site, but if you
can’t remember, no worries! Have a wonderful, safe trip.

  15. Hi – just a note to say thanks for posting the tips on iPhone international travel. I used them on my trip to Prague last week.

    Russell

    • Hi Russell: Thanks so much for letting me know – good to have the feedback
      that the instructions work.

  17. Hello Barbara,

My name is Harikrishnan and I am from Bangalore, India. I came across your blog, while seeking some information in internet. I am glad the Lord has directed me to your blog and would like to offer my appreciation to you for having the determination to change your direction, to what your heart felt.

I have watched your video with interest on the Snake Temple in Penang, Malaysia. In Karnataka also you can find one famous temple which is dedicated to Lord Subramanya. Hindus believe that if a snake is harmed or killed, either intentionally or accidentally, that person attracts a great sin in varying degrees and needs to take several births to discharge that Karma (a bad action) through sufferings. That sin is called Sarpa Dhosha. “Sarpa” in Sanskrit means Snake and Dhosha means Affliction or Sin. That’s the reason why snakes are not on the menu in India. Performing certain Poojas (Prayers with specific Rituals) in some designated temples in India, for instance, Kukke Sri Subramanya Temple in Karnataka, Sri Kalahasthi Temple in Andhra Pradesh and Sri Nagaraja Kshetram Temple in Kerala, is believed to mitigate the sufferings of the sinners and allows peace in one’s life.

There exist certain similarities between yours and mine, as far as the turning points in our lives are concerned. I am now fiftyseven and used to be a successful businessman in the printing industry about twenty years back.

Several reverses in the business as well as personal tragedies, including the death of one of our sons, cast dramatic changes in my conventional way of thinking on lifestyle, attitude towards people, resources etc. Reflecting upon these was sometimes extremely painful and gradually I was able to cast away the shadows that were actively pursuing me and come to terms with the life. Our ancient scriptures, Bhagawad Gita in particular, about which I am sure you would have heard about or which you would have been already practicing, were of tremendous help to bring about the necessary changes in me.

Though I love travelling both in my country as well as Europe, I have been to Germany on business several times, I must admit I am not an outdoors person. Last year I joined a language course to learn German for which I have a fascination. I am now in my fifth Semester and hope to complete the other two final semesters.

I have always believed that I should practice what I learn. I had plans to launch a bilingual magazine (German and English) with a limited circulation in Bangalore. To my knowledge there aren’t any at the moment, except perhaps the ones from Germany. I wanted to provide the other students of German like myself access to another platform, like a magazine, to practice what they learn.

On one hand I find this exciting and on the other, it is frightening also. Honestly I have been dragging my feet in indecision and have been postponing on one pretext or another, till I came across the passage about your Inner Voice, prodding you into action.

That forced me to retrieve my project and determine a time frame. I thank you with my heart that you were instrumental in ensuring my project to finally see the light of the day. I pray to the Lord for more success in your life and also a healthy life. May I invite you to visit my family, should your travel plans bring you to Bangalore? We would be happy to have you amidst us. My e mail id is as follows:

    [email protected]

Would you permit me to use a passage from your blog on the theme of environment protection in my magazine ? I would certainly acknowledge the source. The photos are visual history.

Incidentally friends call me Harry and I like that way as it is short and sweet. Thanks a lot.

    Harry,
    Bangalore.

  18. I am a writer for collegescholarships.org and I was hoping to include you on my top 150 travel blogs for students list. I was wondering if you could e-mail me ([email protected]) so I could ask you a few questions about you and your blog (please write the title of your blog in the e-mail, thanks!)

  19. Barbara, I’m lost. My wife and I are planning a trip through the Copper Canyon in Oct-Nov and I’m very impressed by your postings. I’ve been downloading your chapters and plan to read them through in order. However, I’ve somehow lost the thread and can’t find chapters two and three. I was unable to find a link between chapter one and the succeeding posts. Can you please give me urls or tell me how to track. I’ve tried the archives but they seem to bounce all over the place. Many thanks.

  20. Barbara, just viewed the video of your stay in Gulf Shores, AL. You talked with my friend, my daughter and myself at the Beach Club. I was thrilled to see the video of us on the beach. I will add this to a list of my great memories of our trip there with our very “special” daughter. You do an amazing job.
    Thank you,

    • Hi Amy: Thanks so much for stopping by my blog and taking the time to leave a comment. And I really appreciate your kind words. I have just begun producing videos so it is helpful to know people like them, as they’re definitely a lot of work. Loved meeting you and your friend Sherry, and your very special daughter Anna. Made my day. Barbara
