Flamingo sculpture by American artist Alexander Calder stands in Federal Plaza, in front of the the Ludwig Mies van der Rohe-designed Kluczynski Federal Building in Chicago, Illinois. The piece was unveiled in 1974 to mixed reviews. I well remember seeing it for the first time as a young woman and discussing with my friends whether or not it was “art.” Now, decades later, I am proud to be from a city that was a leader in the installation of outdoor sculpture.
