I’ve seen a lot of pictures and some footage of Angkor Wat in a documentary series called Journeys Through Buddhism but I’ve never actually been there myself. I came close to making the arrangements to go back in January but to my shock and surprise I found myself accepted into University so that put paid to any idea of making an on the spur trip. It is definitely a must see place for me along with Borabadur in Indonesia.
Angkor Wat is a photographers dream, isn’t it? I fell in love with the strangler fig trees wrapping the old stones when I saw a Life magazine picture of Jackie Kennedy visiting Angkor Wat about 1962. It became my dream to get there, and it only took me 30 years.
It is indeed, Vera. I stopped by the Elephant Bar at Raffles Hotel one day and they had an exhibit in a glass case with photos of Jackie O visiting Siem Reap, along with crystal glasses and plates she used, including one wine glass with an imprint of her lipstick on it after all these years.
Wow – the roots almost look like they’re melting. Great photo, I can’t wait to see this!
Such an iconic photo. Somehow the combination of strangler figs and the temples of an older culture is a evocative and moving mix.
