I did the crossing at Huaquillas/Tumbes, and it was a crazy bus ride. Huaquillas has to be one of the busiest, and most frantic border towns I’ve ever been through. Luckily, I was on a guided tour, and transportation was provide the whole way. I don’t know what I would have done if I had to figure it out for myself. Probably end up hitching a ride on a chicken cart…

Grandma and Grampa want to visit new grandson in LA in March, April or May 2012. We are in Minneapolis area. Let us drive your car and we will fly back. We have very little luggage, don’t smoke or drink, and are age 65 and 63. Would like to take about 5 days on our way.

Hello Maili and Jan: Glad to help. Please understand that Guayaquil is considered a dangerous city; the crime rate is very high. However it is relatively safe in the tourist areas due to the incredible police presence. The US Embassy no longer allows its employees to hail taxis on the street, because of the number of kidnappings and holdups that have occurred when using non-vetted taxis. They must call for a taxi from an approved company. I strongly suggest you also follow this practice if you move there, or at the very least use a taxi that is at a major hotel. I’d also suggest finding housing within the tourist district if at all possible. And thanks so much foryour compliment about my photos – means a lot to me. The very best of luck to you.

Dear Barbara, thank you so much for your wonderful pictures and the priceless up-to-date information about Guayaquil! We´ve been trying desperately to get some – - any! useful information about the city and its whereabouts but couldn´t find anything here in Germany apart from travel guides warning to stay away. We got a considerable job offer in Guayaquil and feel very relieved having read your article. Oh, and your photographs of Galapagos – they are by far the best we´ve seen.
