The Christmas for Travelers event in 2009 will now be held Saturday, Dec. 5, from 1-5 PM. (Budget cuts greatly reduced the operating hours of the site, so this special event will be hosted by the Friends of Traveler's Rest. A small entrance fee will be charged.) Posted by the founder of the re-enacting group that demonstrates at T.R. Do come out and support the inn!

Hi Conversion Van:
I must say that in most cases I agree with you about the cleanliness of most hotels and motels - I saw the same documentary. I never use the glasses, and since seeing the program, I never use the bedspreads. But there are the occasional exceptions, and I am always on the lookout for them.

I'm not sure Hotels have come a long way. 48 hours/Dateline or one of those shows did a story last year on Hotel Housekeeping. And from the lowest price to the 5 star Hotels is was pretty disgusting. Maids cleaning toilets then wiping out glasses with the same rubber gloves. There verdict was never use a glass... only use sealed plastic cups for drinking in hotels. Most cheaper hotels have some kind of drug residue in the carpet drapes bedding. Sheets get changed but blankets and mattress pads seldome do. I'd bet form a pure disease standpoint the old hotels were actually cleaner as they were kept up by onsite owners. In any case I travel in a Van and I use hotels for bathrooms and showers but definitely prefer to sleep in the comfort of the bed in my van. These are some really cool pictures though and I'd bet the rooms didn't look that nice when they were used way back in the day.
