I want to tell you about the incredible fares being offered by Spirit Airlines when you join their $9 Fare Club. During the membership process, you are asked to select five preferred cities from the list of cities that the airline serves. At least once every six weeks, Spirit sends out emails offering spectacularly cheap fares exclusively to its members. Although the emails focus on flights to the five preferred cities, members may also log on to Spirit Air’s Fare Club page at any time and see all the deals being offered. For example, today I joined the $9 Fare Club and then logged on to check the current deals being offered. I discovered they were offering flights to Guatemala City and San Pedro Sula, Honduras for one cent. Yes, I said one cent! Because the airline is obviously making these offers to fill up seats during low season on on specific dates that are not fully booked, the key to using the program successfully is to be flexible with your travel plans and able to travel at a moment’s notice. In the case of the one cent fares, the airline required that the flights be booked by midnight today.

Spirit offers a 90-day trial membership for $9. After the initial 90 days the program automatically renews on an annual basis for $39.95, however you can avoid recurring charges at any time by canceling your membership prior to the renewal date. Frankly, I think it’s an incredible deal – very similar to what Ryan Air is doing across Europe. In light of the current problems in the airline industry, which include rising fuel costs that are translating into higher fares and a reduction in available seats, it will be interesting to see how this shakes out. At the very east, I plan to take advantage of a couple of Spirit Airlines’ stupendous special fares.
